Mastodon is a free and open source software system and people can signup, free of charge, at any number of instances (see https://joinmastodon.org). It’s easy to get started – all that is required is an email address and a web browser that supports the platform. Most browsers released within the last two years should work fine.
Any one who has ever used bird-site will be able to use Mastodon and will not miss the Filthy McNasties that are turning bird-site into a toxic cesspool of intolerance. It wouldn’t take too much effort to clean up bird-site but rocket blow-up dude doesn’t seem to be making any progress.
